Digging up the past on the Biloxi beachfront

BILOXI, MS (WLOX)- It's like sifting through the sands of time. University of Southern Mississippi students are combing through the old Moran's art studio property on the Biloxi beachfront. What they find provides a window on the past.

Barbara McClendon is a USM graduate student.

"We're finding some old rusted nails from past construction, some ceramics, maybe the china that the people who lived here used or some of the things Katrina pushed into the ground. A lot of shells obviously," McClendon said.

Volunteers restore Bayou Auguste

Volunteers restore Bayou Auguste

The Mississippi Commission on Marine Resources got an update Tuesday on the restoration project at Bayou Auguste.

The restored bayou, which flows into Biloxi's back bay, used to be a clogged, dirty drainage ditch. But, thanks to a partnership between the Biloxi Housing Authority, The City of Biloxi and the Land Trust, the bayou is no longer an eyesore.

Litter and garbage was removed, new marsh vegetation was planted and the banks of the bayou were stabilized. And most of the work came from volunteers.

"I think we've logged more than 2,000 volunteer hours.

Could money for annexation be put to better use?

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX)- Millions of your hard earned tax dollars are about to be spent paying lawyers to take on annexation fights.

Four South Mississippi cities didn't like judge's rulings denying their annexation requests. Pass Christian alone spent a half million dollars in their quest for more land and just filed an appeal yesterday.

So did all of the other cities meaning more court battles are about to ensue

Massive Biloxi project restores damaged water, sewer system

BILOXI, MS (WLOX)- It's being called the largest infrastructure project in Biloxi's history and much of the work is going on underground.

After six years of planning, work is finally underway to replace all the water, sewer, and drainage lines that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Expect to dodge torn-up streets and sidewalks throughout Biloxi as crews install new water and sewer lines. It's part of a massive project totaling about $355 million.

Shrimp season opening date coming soon

BILOXI, MS (WLOX)- Mississippi is one important step closer to opening this year's shrimp season.

On Tuesday, the Commission on Marine Resources gave the DMR executive director the authority to open the season, once the shrimp reach legal size.

Legal size is 68 count per pound and the shrimp are getting close to that.

Historically, the season opens around the first week of June. And it appears that will be the case in 2012.

Traci Floyd gave commissioners an overview of last year's season and talked about the conditions for growing shrimp this year.
